NYC Attractions

July 26th, 2009

Airplane ticket? √

Hotel? √

Now it’s time to plan your days in NYC…from the mouth watering restaurants and bakeries, the extraordinary and must see landmarks, and the hundreds of boutiques that you have to visit.  Whether it’s your first time or even if you’re a repeat visitor in the city, there’s always something new and exciting to do in the city.  I always have to prepare an itinerary for myself.  It’s so easy to get caught up when you’re walking down a street and your eye catches something in the window that you must have!  Also, Manhattan is a large city and it takes quite some time to travel from Uptown to Downtown so you have to plan your days wisely…spend an entire day downtown than spend the next day uptown.  Just remember, don’t expect to get everything done in one day.

You don’t need a map anymore!  Well sort of…Now there’s a website called ‘www.hopstop.com’ that you can log on to directly from your phone.  You’ll have to provide the ‘to and from’ addresses and VOILA!  Metro (subway) directions on how to get to your destination will pop up.  It tells you how far you are from the subway entrance and what trains to catch.  It’s so simple!

Places you should see…

NYC

I love animals!  I make it a point to visit zoos and aquariums in all the cities I visit.  If you’re strolling through Central Park, visit the Central Park Zoo!  It may take up about an hour of your time and costs $8.  Many of the exhibits are built with a see-through divider which makes it easier to look at the animals up close.  Watch for the polar bears!

Guggenheim

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (also known as the Guggenheim Museum) is another popular attraction with 600 various artworks that were purchased or gifted to the museum between 1937 and 1949.  The Guggenheim is an internationally renowned art museum and one of the most significant architectural icons of the 20th century.  There’s a viewing of different exhibitions of modern and contemporary art throughout the year.  And, you’ll get a great work out walking up the six story circular path.  $18

Fifth Avenue Shopping

Welcome to Fifth Avenue!  This is only the beginning…of the shopping and the congestion.  On this street, you’ll see lots of tourists like yourself who are looking for low to high end quality shopping.  You’ll find the ever popular H&M to the sophisticated Henri Bendel here.  But don’t get too caught up in the shopping because you never know which celebrity just walked pass you.

JG Melon

1291 3rd Avenue

What a day!  After a very long day of sight-seeing and shopping, you’ll need to grab a bite to eat.  I love eating at J.G. Melon located on the Upper East Side.  This place is jam packed with people wanting to eat a hearty all-American meal…a delicious cheeseburger and fries with a glass of Stella Artois.  You’ll feel leaving satisfied and ready to call it a night.

It’s Hair…

July 25th, 2009

Jane Tran

Polka dots, animal print, floral patterns…there’s a print for everyone!  I’m talking about Jane Tran’s hair accessories.  Trust me, they’re one of the greatest creations.   Jane Tran’s bobbi pins and clips hold your hair together for all the various hair up-dos..my favorite is the ‘bohemian’ look that I absolutely adore or for those days you’ve just gotta hit the gym without the stack of pins in your hair!  All you need is one or two depending on the style and how much hair you’ve gathered.

What a fabulous idea!  The pins make great party favors or stocking stuffers!  And, DOLCE does complimentary gift wrapping!

Medusa's Heirloom

Medusa's Heirloom

Whether you have short or long hair, headbands should be a ‘must-have’ in every woman’s accessory closet!  Medusa’s white and black floral headband was seen in the special June issue of InStyle Hair.  All the woman are wearing it in NYC…you should too!  Headbands are the latest trend to hit the scene and will carry throughout fall.  Stock up on yours!

Remember, headbands are not just for pulling the hair out of your face…use it to complete your ensemble!

Hanky Panky Thongs

July 23rd, 2009

Many women love wearing their favorite grandma panties because they’re so comfortable and it never feels like something is wedged between you butt cheeks…any woman can understand that feeling.  Let’s face it…they’re NOT sexy or stylish, for that matter.  It’s time to tuck those grannies far away in your drawer and never look back.  To replace your old ones, start collecting HANKY PANKY thongs!  These thongs were invented by two women who have claimed to have ‘the most comfortable thong’…and it’s so TRUE!   And it’s hard to imagine, but ‘one size’ fits all.

Hanky Panky

The low rise Hanky Panky thongs (NOW available in PETITE low rise for sizes 0-4) are super-comfy and also very sexy for the bedroom.  Fill your drawer with all the new colors…

BilLy’s SecReT RecIPe…

July 18th, 2009

BilLy’S CuPCakEs

Sshhh…it’s a SecReT!  Well, not anymore that is.  Billy has shared his FAmOus cupcake recipe with the world (although it is slightly modified compared to the ones they sell in the bakery).  I love to bake these when it’s a girlfriend’s birthday or during the holiday season.  Everyone just loves them.  These cupcakes are out of this world!

cupcakes

Billy’s Bakery is one of my favorite ‘sweet’ spots when I’m in the city.  My favorite is the vanilla cupcake with the pink frosting…I always bring a box home to share!

(Makes ~ 30 cupcakes)

 Here’s what you need…
1 3/4 cups cake flour, not self-rising
1 1/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into 1-inch cubes
4 large eggs
1 cup whole milk
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1. Preheat oven to 325°. Line cupcake pans with paper liners; set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine flours, sugar, baking powder, and salt; mix on low speed until combined. Add butter, mixing until just coated with flour.

2. In a large glass measuring cup, whisk together eggs, milk, and vanilla. With mixer on medium speed, add wet ingredients in 3 parts, scraping down sides of bowl before each addition; beat until ingredients are incorporated but do not overbeat.

3. Divide batter evenly among liners, filling about two-thirds full. Bake, rotating pan halfway through, until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean, 17 to 20 minutes.

4. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Repeat process with remaining batter. Once cupcakes have cooled, use a small offset spatula to frost tops of each cupcake. Decorate with sprinkles, if desired. Serve at room temperature.

Billy’s Vanilla Buttercream

Colored sprinkles, for decorating (optional)
Makes enough for 30 cupcakes

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
6 to 8 cups confectioners’ sugar
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream butter until smooth and creamy, 2 to 3 minutes. With mixer on low speed, add 6 cups sugar, milk, and vanilla; mix until light and fluffy. If necessary, gradually add remaining 2 cups sugar to reach desired consistency.

(Add food coloring if you want an assortment of colored frosting)
